RICHARD(3) OF LOUISVILLE 1738-1803

Probably born in Baltimore Co., Maryland, Richard was the second to the fourth child of John and Mary Smith Chenoweth. His birth date is given as 1738, but it could be as late as 1745 or as early as 1734. He is perhaps the most famous of all early Chenoweths, certainly the best known of the 3rd generation. He came to Virginia, when very young, with his parents. Richard married before 1772 when he sold lands his father left him and his brothers, as this sale was signed by his wife, Margaret 'Peggy' McCarty. Most likely Richard and Peggy married in Virginia. The Chenoweth histories have carried Peggy's name as McCarthy and her father as Thomas, but it is more likely that the name was McCarty and her father Nicholas McCarty, who also became a well-known figure of Jefferson Co., KY, where Richard and Peggy eventually located. Nicholas had a son named Thomas, maybe this is a source of the confusion. Richard and Peggy had a number of children, the first probably born in Berkeley County.

Richard appears to have moved first to Monongalia Co., then to Kentucky, the first of the Chenoweths to make this move West. The year was 1778 when he accompanied George Roger Clark's expedition from Fort Pitt to the Falls of Ohio, the site of present day Louisville. He is recognized as one of the 7 founders of the City of Louisville. Richard served in the Revolutionary War, listed on payroll records of Captain John Owen's company under the command of LTC George Rogers Clark in Jul 1780. Later Richard contracted to build Fort Nelson there, in the heart of what is now downtown Louisville. He paid for the labor and materials for this construction from his own pocket and was never reimbursed, leaving him practically penniless. Serving there as Sheriff of what was then Kentucky County, there was actually a plan by some to call the new settlement Margaretville in honor of his wife Peggy, but it was decided instead to name it Louisville after the then King of France, Louis XVI. [an account of this is found in a 1887 letter of Dr. William James Chenoweth to L.C. Draper]

During their eleventh year in Kentucky, in 1789, Richard and his family were subjected to a surprise Indian attack. Richard and his daughter Amelia were wounded but escaped to get help. Son James also escaped into hiding after suffering a severe tomahawk wound. Naomi, the youngest and first to be born in Kentucky, survived undiscovered in her bed. Peggy suffered the worse, being scalped and left for dead, though she too survived. This incident became known as the "Chenoweth massacre". Peggy and Richard would have two more children born in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Richard died in Kentucky near the age of sixty when they were half grown. Peggy would outlive him by 36 years dying in Shelby County.

There are several questions surrounding Richard. There are some vague indications that he may have had a previous marriage and children. This may account for the label of 'near relative' placed on Gideon by Alfred Pirtle in his account of James S. Many of the accounts of Richard conflict and the correct listing of all his children is an uncertainty. Accounts of the 'Massacre' vary wildly. Richard and Peggy are buried in the Chenoweth (later Porter Family) cemetery, near Middletown, KY.

Any one with a love of history would do well to read a wonderful account of this family as related by their son James, detailing their journey to Kentucky, the start of Louisville, and the Chenoweth Massacre. Also available is Blaine Guthrie, Jr's account of Richard as published by the Filson Club of Kentucky, 1972. This detail contains many historical facts about his life. The details of this account of the Chenoweth massacre are probably more accurate than Pirtle's. Bruce Chenoweth, a descendant of Richard and Peggy's, has a page devoted to them including a graphic drawing of Richard, if you want to visit his site: Chenoweth Site hosted by Bruce Chenoweth.
